RSOs at UIndy: Circle K

Abby Land | Entertainment Editor August 22, 2018 2 minutes read

Embodying the University of Indianapolis’ motto, “Education for Service,”  is the volunteer organization known as Circle K. Club president and junior marketing major Jordan Nussear laughed as she acknowledged that the name is the same as a recognizable chain of gas stations. The K in the club’s name, however, stands for Kiwanis, an international service club.

“We are a volunteer organization that does a lot of different projects throughout the community,” Nussear said. “We do a lot of interclubs, or events with other schools across the state of Indiana.”

Included on the list of those projects is walking dogs at Southside Animal Shelter on Sundays. The group also works with Wafer Homeless Ministry, Inc. during Thanksgiving by serving dinner.

For club treasurer Christopher Jones, the most memorable service project he has done with Circle K was helping with the demolition and cleanup of a house near UIndy’s campus that was significantly damaged in a fire.

“Circle K means a lot to me. I’ll be starting my third year as a club member and second year as a board member,” Jones said. “Circle K creates a great community on campus where we can grow together and provide service on campus and to our surrounding community.”

The club meets Monday nights in Schwitzer 010. Open to everyone, Circle K will be hosting their first Saturday Service Spectacular on Aug. 25. Check-in starts at 8:20 a.m., and participants will work until noon at one of three locations across Indianapolis, including a food bank and a farm. During the 2018-2019 school year, Nussear said, the club is focused on expanding both its membership and the number of projects that students complete in the community.

“Through Circle K, you get the meet a lot of different people while doing work that has a positive impact on the world around you,” Nussear said.

UIndy is home to over 50 Registered Student Organizations such as UIndy DM, Student Organization of Latinos, Delight Ministries and Better Together.  For more information on RSOs around campus, visit: www.uindy.edu/campus-life/student-organizations
