From Dixie in 1966 to Grady I in 2019, a new mascot has entered the University of Indianapolis’ campus.
After years of attending events and games, along with stealing the hearts of hundreds of UIndy students, Grady I has officially retired, according to The Daily Journal. He signed off as live mascot during UIndy’s spring 2026 commencement where he was proclaimed “Mascot Emeritus.”
Originally a racing dog from New South Wales, Australia, Crimson Greyson Veritas II, or Grady II, was born on April 16, 2023. Partnering with Greyhound Pets of America Indianapolis, UIndy Marketing and Communications Manager and Live Mascot Handler Coran Sigman helped bring Grady II home, according to The Daily Journal. The pup raced his way into the new position as a UIndy Greyhound on Oct. 16, 2025, taking over for Grady I.
Grady I announced his semi-retirement in 2025, however he stayed on campus to help his buddy Grady II get adjusted to a new lifestyle of meeting new people daily, eating pup cups, chasing squirrels and crashing campus tours, according to UIndy 360. Grady II officially started his mascot role in May.
“I told people at the debut of Grady II, and I truly mean it with all of my heart, this program would not be successful, or we would not even have a second version, if I didn’t have the buy-in and the support.” Sigman told Daily Journal. “Both physically by showing up for Grady, but also emotionally and mentally too.”
Grady II’s new full-time job is live mascot, according to UIndy Magazine, but he doesn’t spend his time only attending events. Simply walking around to meet his Greyhound friends will make him happy.
“I am thrilled that the legacy of the live mascot program is writing a new chapter with Grady II,” said Sigman in an interview with UIndy 360.
Grady II is available at both on and off campus events. To be considered, you must place an appearance request at least two weeks in advance. More information can be found through UIndy.
