RSOs new to campus provide new experiences

Eric Moore II | Staff Writer October 8, 2014 3 minutes read

With the new academic year comes new Registered Student Organizations and new opportunities for student. Currently this year’s only new RSO is the Chemistry Club.

The Chemistry Club is a way for students to get involved with the chemistry department at the University of Indianapolis. The club plans to participate in recreational and volunteer activities.

A club that is a recent new addition to RSOs is Xplore Indy.

Xplore Indy is a program that is designed to help get students acclimated to Indianapolis. This year, Xplore Indy created a scavenger hunt for students downtown, which helped students get used to Indianapolis as a city.

“Students can gain culture and experience from college,” said Director of Student Activities Stephanie Barry. “But you have to find out what the city has to offer to get the full experience from college.”

Xplore Indy helps new students by showing them landmarks and attractions that are unique to Indianapolis. Most students know the big landmarks such as Bankers Life Fieldhouse and Lucas Oil Stadium, but many of them are unfamiliar with the rest of Indianapolis.

Barry said the reason why Xplore Indy is important is that many UIndy students are from smaller towns and are not acclimated to city life.

Senior and President of Xplore Indy Kristen Williams said that she became involved with Xplore Indy because she was not originally from Indianapolis.

“If you’re a new student to UIndy, check your email from Kory Vitangeli and try to get involved in whatever you can,” Williams said.

Barry said that there has been  interest in forming a rugby club and a mixed martial arts club.

Sophomore marketing major Willie Bryan, is the treasurer for Indianapolis Student Government, RSO Liaison for UIndy for Riley and a resident assistant in Crowe Hall. He will also be the president of Hound’s Rugby.

Bryan explained that Hound’s Rugby has been requested for approval and they will present to the Student Leadership Council Board this month in order to become an official RSO.

Hound’s Rugby will be a coed RSO so both men and women are welcome to play.

“We want everyone to know that you do not have to play to be a part of the team,” Bryan said. “We have many positions and duties that anyone can do, and they will be very welcomed and a vital part to the team.”

Barry said that there has been a lot of buzz and a broad interest in the new clubs, and the more students who become involved, the better.
