The Video Music Awards does not have a theme when it comes to fashion choices like the Met Gala; I should not judge people’s style choices. Yet, here I am — judge, jury and executioner.
Like many people, when there is a luxury event held for the biggest celebrities, I sit in front of my TV in old pajamas and judge their outfits. It is impossible not to, even if you are trying to not be a hater. I like the idea of a red carpet with no rules, which is what we get without a strict theme — not having a theme let’s celebrities, or their stylists, bring out their personality and show off their true style. The VMAs are definitely seen as a more fun red carpet event, and I think this year’s guests showed out.
One of the best celebrity looks this year did just that, showed off her personality and in my opinion, has the No. 1 look at this year’s VMAs. This celebrity is none other than singer Chappell Roan. Roan showed out to this year’s carpet in a medieval-style outfit; Roan of Arc, if you will. Her look included detailed armor nails, a long velvet robe and everyone’s favorite — a sword. She’s taken over the world, not only with her music, but with everything she brings to fashion.
Chappell being included this year is amazing, but the rest of the guest line up was definitely better than I expected. When it comes to events like the VMAs, you can almost always guess the lineup without having to look for the list. Though, this year, a few less-known faces were shown, such as Ashely Gill and Grant Gibbs, who I was excited to see appear together.
This year’s carpet was black, and the background was in a similar shade. I think having the dark background went well with almost everyone’s outfits, compared to the dark red that you usually imagine on a carpet walk.
Overall, I genuinely enjoyed this year’s VMA’s red carpet. I think it was close to the 2024 Met Gala, and that is saying something. Some of the outfits were questionable, like Addison Rae with her tutu and lingerie, or Tyler Posey, in his most casual ensemble of a Blink-182 shirt and camouflage pants. I found myself wondering, with all the freedom celebrities are given at the VMAs when it comes to fashion, why did Posey decided casual was the way to go? Yet when it came to Sabrina Carpenter’s timeless, crystal embroidered dress, and LISA with her nude, hooded gown, I stopped questioning and started appreciating the gift that fashion truly is.
