How The Reflector will cover Election Day 2020

Noah Crenshaw | Editor-in-Chief November 2, 2020

With Election Day just around the corner, more than 1.7 million Indiana residents have already voted, which is double the amount of early votes cast in 2016, according to The Indianapolis Star. More record voter turnout is expected as the election takes place in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Reflector will be there covering this historically unprecedented election.

All day on Nov. 3 we will have a live blog for the election, along with coverage on our social media. The blog will be updated throughout the day, after the polls close and throughout the night with the latest results.

You can track the election results as they come in by going to our live blog. We will be covering the presidential, governor and Indiana attorney general races in addition to updates on races throughout the state.

The Reflector will be relying on the Associated Press to determine the winners. The AP has counted the votes in U.S. elections for more than 170 years, and will be declaring the winners in 7,000 races this year, according to the AP.

The AP’s race calls are not predictions or projections, rather they are declarations, according to the AP. If they are unable to definitively say who has won a race, they do not call it or speculate, according to the AP. A race is only called when the AP determines that a trailing candidate has no chance of catching up to the leading candidate. When the AP does call the winners, you can find updates on those results on our website.

We will most likely not know who has won every race on Election Night. According to FiveThirtyEight, it will likely be a few days before the full results are known. In Indiana, the results reported on Election Night are not official, and county boards have to certify the results 10 days after the election, according to IndyStar.

Absentee ballots are not able to be processed until Election Day, as it is illegal under Indiana law to count or process votes before then.

To find our coverage you can go to our 2020 Election Hub, which will be updated with links to our live blog and our latest stories about the 2020 election.
