Black Sails

Nicole Monday | Staff Writer February 5, 2014 2 minutes read

The world of the Golden Age of Piracy has come back to life in the new STARZ original series “Black Sails,” which airs Saturdays at 9 p.m. The characters are based on the ones in the ever-popular Robert Louis Stevenson book “Treasure Island.” Created by Jon Steinberg and Robert Levine, this new series promises its first season will be an action-packed adventure full of pirates, secrets and of course thievery.

Set in the West Indies in 1715, the first episode of this series served as more of an introduction to the main characters who will be featured in later episodes. The beginning introduces Captain Flint (Toby Stephens) as a bad pirate who likes to battle and murder people in order to get what he wants. On board with Captain Flint are his right-hand man Gates (Mark Ryan) and the recently captured John Silver (played by Luke Arnold) as well as the rest of the mangy crew. The crew of pirates soon docks in the pirate port of Nassau, where we meet brothel owner Eleanor Guthrie (Hannah New). The rest of the show reveals Flint’s plans to fight the British Royal Navy in order to win the “loot” worth more than $5 million.

Rated MA for audiences over 17, this show has just the right amount of violence, sexual encounters and crude language to keep the viewer entertained without becoming disgusted. Despite all of that, “Black Sails” has a story line full of adventure and suspense.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
