The Minecraft Movie in review

Hunter Baker | Staff Writer April 28, 2025 2 minutes read

“The Minecraft Movie”: Yes, that’s right. Finally, after so many years, we got a movie on one of the most popular video games out there.

The main face of the movie is played by none other than Jack Black as Steve. I thought this was a great actor to play such a huge face of “Minecraft.”

The movie was done very well in terms of the actors chosen to play the roles. Jack Black did very well because he is such a character with such a great personality. Now, what I did not like about the movie is the CGI. It didn’t make sense, and I have seen better animations in my time. What was particularly nice was the number of mobs and structures they took from the real game and brought them to life.

The ending was pretty good and if you are a “Minecraft” fan you will love this movie, regardless if it is better just playing the game. This movie fell short because it’s so much better as a game. It felt like it did not make a lot of sense to be a live-action movie. There were a lot of things shown in the movie that we already knew would happen because of how much it related to the game.

I will note the energy was there. Jack Black was the correct pick and made me laugh so many different times. The use of the mobs was nice, some of the CGI was OK and there were a lot of different colors being brought together at times. Besides that, the game is better played than watched, and it was only a matter of time before it hit the big screen. If you are a “Minecraft” player, I would say watch it, even though you are going to know a lot of what happens next, but still Jack Black as Steve has to go down as one of the greatest picks for an actor of all time.
