Faculty Senate approves alternate grading options

Hallie Gallinat | Distribution Manager April 4, 2020 2 minutes read

University of Indianapolis undergraduate students now have the option to choose an alternate grading system for Semester II of the 2019-2020 school year, University President Robert Manuel announced in an email to students, faculty and staff. The system was discussed by the Faculty Senate during their March 31 meeting and the email about the alternate grading system was sent out on April 3.

According to Manuel’s update, grades will be recorded in three categories for undergraduates who choose the alternate grading system. Students who earn a grade of C or higher will have their grades recorded as satisfactory, or S. Grades of C-, D+, D, or D- will be recorded as pass, or P, and grades of F will be recorded as unsatisfactory, or U.

All three grades of S, U and P will not be included in a student’s GPA, according to UIndy’s COVID-19 website. In addition, only grades of S will count toward major, minor and concentration requirements, with the P grade only counting toward the General Education Core, according to the website. Further details about the alternate grading system can be found on UIndy’s COVID-19 website.

Undergraduates may choose to have their grades recorded with this alternate grading system after final grades are posted on May 6, according to Manuel. They will then fill out a form saying which courses they wish to change to the alternate grading system. This form is due before May 12.

On the original proposal, one of the points stated that academic units can decide whether to accept the S/U/P grading system to help satisfy major, minor and concentration course requirements. This also includes pre-requisites for major courses, according to the original proposal. In the current plan, if a student must earn a grade of at least C- in a prerequisite, a grade of P will not be accepted, according to Manuel.
