Police discover bullet hole at Greyhound Village

Ainger Alexander | Editorial Assistant February 8, 2017

Residents of Greyhound Village called campus police and reported hearing a loud noise in or near the building at approximately 1:30 a.m. on Jan. 22. The University of Indianapolis Police responded to the call and at around 3:30 a.m. found a bullet hole in the inside hallway door area near the elevator lobby on the first floor. After discovering the bullet hole, the campus police, along with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, launched an investigation to gather information about the incident and ultimately, took a suspect into custody. Officers also reportedly increased patrols on campus and around the area.

Despite police discovering the bullet hole, Greyhound Village was not placed on active shooter lockdown and no Watchdog Alert was sent due to the long period of time that passed before evidence was found, Vitangeli said. Police felt that the situation was not an active threat. The following day at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m., UIndy Police and Vice President for Student and Campus Affairs and Dean of Students Kory Vitangeli hosted forums at which students, faculty and staff members could ask questions about the incident as well as voice their concerns or offer any information they had.

Vitangeli sent a campus-wide email on Jan. 25 stating that an individual not affiliated with the University of Indianapolis was arrested by the UIPD in connection with the shooting that occurred Sunday morning in the Greyhound Village Apartments.

“We are very grateful for the students who came forward with bits of information, and for the work the police did that led to an arrest warrant,” Vitangeli said. “It shows that in hard times we stand together and that when we say, ‘If you see something, say something,’ that we are actually listening.”

Anyone with information regarding this incident, has been asked to call 911, contact the UIndy Police Department’s non-emergency line at (317) 788-3372 or submit a tip to the anonymous online tip line at http://www.uindy.edu/police-department/anonymous-crime-report-form.
