Lindsay Clancy’s trial has divided the nation, with the question of whether she carefully planned her children’s murders or if her consciousness was taken over by postpartum psychosis still lingering.
The case was ruled a mistrial after the jurors split 11-1 in favor of not guilty, per The New York Times. Clancy’s lawyer, Kevin Reddington, attempted to have the lone-juror removed from the court due to ignorance regarding the judge’s instructions and explanations about the law, according to The New York Post. Reddington was denied in that action, as the judge wanted to avoid choosing between the sides or opinions of the jury, according to BBC News. It is understandable to feel overwhelmed during a severe murder case, however the defense seemed to point in the obvious direction; that Clancy wasn’t conscious or mentally healthy during the murders.
Prosecution claims Clancy carefully curated the plan to murder her three children then herself, back in early 2023. I absolutely do not believe Clancy consciously killed them, or attempted to take her own life. Instead, I support the certainty that she carried out these actions due to extreme postpartum psychosis.
Psychopathology, the study of mental disorders, defines postpartum psychosis as a severe mental health disorder that negatively impacts a new mother’s behavior and sense of reality. Key symptoms could include delusions, hallucinations, or paranoia, according to Cleveland Clinic. As a psychology major in my final year, I have taken multiple classes focusing on mental health. I greatly enjoy learning about psychopathology, brain abnormalities and more. After learning so much about psychological well-being and disorders, I hold extreme empathy and understanding for mothers who experience any postpartum depression or psychosis, as they can be mental health emergencies that can even result in themselves or their children getting hurt.
In terms of the Clancy Trial, The New York Times describes the timeline of Clancy’s mental state as declining, following the birth of her third child in Sept. 2022. After his birth, she began to show increased anxiety, leading her to seek treatment where she was prescribed a staggering 13 medications, just between Sept. 2022 and Jan. 2023, according to USA Today. Being on so many strong psychiatric drugs can alter a human’s state of consciousness, mental processes, and behavior according to The National Institute of Health.
Despite her obvious struggles with her mental state, a nationally-recognized court case began in July. The defense had a strong case claiming that Clancy was under a severe case of postpartum psychosis, which gave her hallucinations ordering her to murder her children. They built their case using Clancy’s actions of “begging for help” to her mother about depression, anxiety, and inability to sleep, and even admitting herself to an outpatient program for postpartum depression and then later to a psychiatric hospital according to The New York Times. On top of those actions, Fox News stated that before the children’s deaths, Clancy even called the suicide hotline asking for help with her suicidal thoughts, however they turned her away because she didn’t have an actual plan to execute.
According to The New York Times, we are still awaiting information on whether there will be a retrial, a plea deal or a drop in the case. Clancy is staying at Tewksbury State Hospital receiving psychiatric care until the next hearing, according to CBS News. Reddington wishes to present a motion to dismiss at Clancy’s next trial date, scheduled for Sept. 29 where I hope she is fairly heard.
