The University of Indianapolis community is mourning the loss of a student.
Last night at 8:24 police received a report of a deceased person found in the University Lofts, according to a UIndy Public Safety Advisory and police transcript obtained through the Citizen app. An original welfare check was requested earlier in the night, according to police radio, with a follow-up call reporting an unconscious person inside the apartment.
Police radio reports described the student as a “mentally emotional 20-year-old biracial male” who was found unconscious in a third-floor room of the West Lofts. The student had not spoken to or been to class since Tuesday, according to police radio.
Students gathered outside the apartment and looked out of their rooms as more emergency vehicles arrived at the building.
“I was watching from my balcony originally,” West Lofts resident and UIndy student Sophia Tintera said. “I first heard the sirens, and so I obviously came out to look. I saw the ambulance show up first, and there was originally a fire truck behind them, and a bunch of EMTs went in with a stretcher. Later, people came up and said that the Citizen app said that a deceased body was found. That was really scary.”
UIndy President Tanuja Singh released an official statement late last night sharing the news of the student’s passing. The email included support resources and expressed sympathy to the community.
“We know this news is deeply upsetting and affects many members of our community,” Singh said in her email. “Counseling and support services are available for anyone who needs them.”
Out of respect for the family’s privacy, the student’s name is not being released at this time.
This is a developing story. We will continue to update as we learn more.
