Indy Fuel set to start its season Dec. 6

Caroline Krauch | Sports Editor November 25, 2024 3 minutes read

Indy Fuel is a local team in the Indianapolis area that is part of the ECHL, a minor league affiliate of the National Hockey League, and is set to open its season in December.

According to the Encyclopedia of Indianapolis, Indy Fuel was admitted to the ECHL in 2013. The ECHL is one of two minor leagues that serve as a feeder system into the NHL. Players from Fuel have the chance to get pulled to the Rockford Icehogs, which is part of the American Hockey League.

The AHL serves as the primary development program for the NHL, meaning professional teams are primarily looking at the AHL for new players. The Icehogs are an affiliate of the Chicago Blackhawks so most players picked up by the Icehogs go to them.

According to FloSports, “The American Hockey League and the ECHL serve as important prospect development levels for young hockey players looking to debut in the NHL. Every NHL team has an affiliate team in the AHL. While ECHL teams aren’t required to have an affiliate NHL team, only four NHL teams are currently without an ECHL affiliate.”

Indy Fuel is named in honor of Indianapolis’ history with motorsports and the Speedway. When Fuel rose to fame, its popularity led to the closing of Indianapolis’ previous hockey team, Indiana Ice, in 2014.

According to the Fishers event center’s website, “The Indy Fuel and racing go hand-in-hand. The Fuel name is derived from the rich history of auto racing in Indianapolis that has ‘fueled’ the local economy for over a hundred years.”

In seven seasons, Fuel have sent three players to the NHL including Justin Holl to the Toronto Maple Leafs and Collin Delia and Kevin Lankinen to the Blackhawks. Fuel is one of two minor league hockey teams in Indiana, the other being the Fort Wayne Komets.

Indy Fuel will open the 2025 season on Dec. 6 at the Fishers Event Center, a new venue, against the Iowa Heartlanders at 7 p.m.

According to its website, the venue is “Home to three professional sports teams—Indy Fuel Hockey Club (ECHL), Indy Ignite (Professional Volleyball Federation) and Fishers Freight (Indoor Football League) — the Fishers Event Center will be a powerhouse for sports and entertainment alike.”

The game on Dec. 26 is the opening ceremony for the team and the start in a series of theme nights the team will host. Some of the themes include Taylor Swift, Hawaiian Holidays and Glow Night.  For more information on Indy Fuel and its upcoming events, people can go to their website.
