Indiana GOP candidate arrested day before election

Emma Foutz | Editorial Assistant November 5, 2024 1 minute read

Jim Schenke, Republican candidate for the 26th House District near West Lafayette, was arrested for violating a protection order Monday morning, according to Lafayette Journal & Courier.

Schenke violated the order by allegedly commenting on a Facebook post of the individual who filed the protective order against him.

The Tippecanoe County Police received a call Sunday night regarding the contact, Tippecanoe County Chief Deputy Terry Ruley said. Officers arrested Schenke on a preliminary charge of invasion of privacy early Monday morning, according to the county jail log.

“Part of the order is to not have any direct or indirect contact, and that does include social media,” Tippecanoe County Sheriff Robert Goldsmith said to the Purdue Exponent. “The [victim] … made a post on Facebook and Mr. Schenke commented on it, so he was arrested for invasion of privacy.”

However, Schenke posted a photo of himself voting at the polls on Facebook this morning.
Schenke is running against Democratic incumbent Chris Campbell for the 26th House District seat. Indiana polls are currently closed, but as of “The Reflector” press time, there are no results posted for this seat.
