Funds for the fighters

Genevieve Condon, Managing Editor October 13, 2026 3 minutes read

The University of Indianapolis’ women’s volleyball program surpassed its goal of raising $1,000 for breast cancer research at the second annual “Dig Pink” match, according to UIndy Athletics.

For the past two years, UIndy has partnered with the Side-Out Foundation, an organization committed to research for metastatic breast cancer. Not only did the Greyhounds add a victory to their season record, but the event was a win for breast cancer awareness as well, with the university exceeding its donation goal. Furthermore, the game illustrated how the UIndy community is eager to support those fighting cancer.

“We’re just playing for a bigger cause than ourselves,” said Defensive Specialist Macy Bruton. “We’re playing for all the breast cancer survivors, and we’re raising awareness for the community. I feel like there’s so many emotions towards this game, not just for our team, but for the whole community. It’s something that’s really special.”

The Side-Out Foundation raises money for breast cancer research through women’s volleyball. Nationwide “Dig Pink” initiatives raise money for the Side-Out foundation. According to Side-Out’s Community Engagement Leader, Hannah Carey, the funds go to both in-house research and medical research. Donations contribute to finding a cure for breast cancer, while also providing more support for those fighting the disease.

“One of our goals is to have 1,000 patients on that treatment analysis. Obviously, the first goal there would be to get more schools on board to host Dig Pink,” said Carey. “The other impact that it’s mainly made is having a higher purpose for volleyball. A lot of people want to give to communities and want to help, and they have the best foot forward to start. They’re like, I’m going to donate money somewhere, but really knowing exactly where the funds are going feels way more personal. Knowing that the money is going to that research and that treatment analysis is huge to be able to say we made this impact.”

According to UIndy Associate Athletic Director for Marketing and Fan Experience, Heidi Hoepner, UIndy volleyball’s “Dig Pink” event was more than just a game. At the match, there was a silent auction, photo booth and T-shirt toss, all designed to promote awareness and support those affected by breast cancer. Additionally, the volleyball team visited the Community MD Anderson Cancer Center prior to the game with care packages for the patients, according to Hoepner. All ticket proceeds from the game were donated to the Side-Out Foundation as well, per UIndy Athletics. Hoepner emphasized the fundraising elements of the event, but also the importance of spreading awareness about the cause and providing general support.

“I think it comes back to that education piece of making sure that we provide resources and awareness,” said Hoepner. “I just think it’s important when it’s something that impacts so many people. If we can be a small part of bringing more joy to those that are fighting it or have fought it in the past, I think it’s important to be a part of that.”
