UIndy suspends athletic-related activities for out-of-season sports due to COVID-19 cluster

Noah Crenshaw | Editor-in-Chief October 29, 2020

The University of Indianapolis has halted all athletic-related activities for out-of-season sports for the next two weeks, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Neil Perdue announced in the university’s weekly COVID-19 update email on Oct. 29. The suspension was due to a cluster of positive COVID-19 cases that were discovered over the past week.

The clusters were determined through contact tracing efforts, Perdue said in the email. Through contact tracing, they discovered that the cases cluster around several of the athletic teams and their close contacts.

While the current cases may represent a relatively small sample of UIndy’s total student-athlete population, the university made the decision to halt the athletic activities for the sports that are out-of-season, Perdue said in the email. Sports that are in-season are still allowed to continue with the activities, according to the email.

Perdue said in the email. that university hopes that pausing the activities for the next two weeks will allow for the cluster of cases to be addressed safely.

In the past week, 52 new positive cases among students were reported on UIndy’s COVID-19 Dashboard, 32 of which were reported in the last 4 days. As of Oct. 28, there are 63 individuals in isolation due to a positive test and 165 individuals currently in quarantine due to exposure.
