I. Letters to the Editor
All letters to the editor from members of the student body and campus community will be favorably considered for publication under the First Amendment, and effort will be made to include a diverse range of opinions. Editors also retain the right to reject any letter(s) for any reason.
If any letter is unfavorable toward an individual or group at the university, the opinion editor reserves the right to let the individual or group explain the reason for the letter. If after reviewing the facts, the letter proves to be the truth, the letter may be published. A response from the opinion editor, editor-in-chief or concerned party also may be published. If the letter proves libelous, the letter writer will be contacted by the opinion editor.
Letters may be subject to editing for grammar and spelling. The indicator (sic) may appear after the error. Letters will be edited for obscenity.
To be considered for publication, letters to the editor must include a valid name and telephone number, which will be verified. The opinion editor will contact the letter writer to ensure the validity of the letter. Letters are subject to condensation and editing to remove profanity. Submission of a letter gives The Reflector permission to publish it in print and/or online.
In rare and unusual circumstances, in which necessity can be adequately established, and with full agreement of the Editorial Board, anonymity (name withheld) may be respected as long as the name of the author is revealed to the opinion editor and the editor-in-chief.
II. Commentaries
The content of a commentary will be checked by the opinion editor prior to publication in print and/or online. If any question arises about the content of the column, two-thirds of the Editorial Board must approve the column before it is published.
Commentaries will be clearly marked as such and will appear only on the Op/Ed page(s) and/or the online opinion section.
III. Columns
Columns may be written by guest columnists and must be clearly indicated as such.
Columns also must be read, edited and approved by the opinion editor, no matter in which section of the paper and/or online publication they appear.
Advertising Policies
The Reflector welcomes advertisers both on and off campus. Advertising rates may vary according to the patron’s specifications. For more information, see our media kit.
I. University Discount
Advertisements for programs associated with the university receive a 20 percent discount. For more information, contact The Reflector’s business manager.
II. Controversial Advertisements
1. Advertisements involving alcohol
The University of Indianapolis restricts the use of alcohol on campus, and many students are under the age of 21. Alcoholic beverage advertisements also are regulated by law, and these laws should be consulted before running any alcoholic beverage advertisement, which may be prohibited. The business manager will consult with the director of underwriting and advertising about any such advertising.
When running any bar advertisement, university policy states no prices will be given for alcoholic beverages, and the name of the university cannot be used. Other aspects such as Monday Night Football, Ladies’ Night, Free Popcorn, etc. may be emphasized.
A public service announcement equal to the size of the bar ad must be run beside or near it. The PSA will be obtained by The Reflector.
2. Advertisements involving smoking, tobacco and/or vaping
The University of Indianapolis is a smoke-free campus, and many students are under the age of 21. Cigarette advertisements also are heavily regulated by state and national law, including the requirement to contain warnings from the Surgeon General. These laws should be consulted before running any cigarette advertisement, which may be prohibited by law. The business manager will consult with the director of underwriting and advertising about any such advertising.
In addition, any such ad also would require that a public service announcement of equal size against smoking must be run beside or near any cigarette advertisement. The PSA will be obtained by The Reflector.
3. Political Advertisements
Political advertisements are regulated by state and national laws. These laws should be consulted before running any advertisement for a political candidate or party.
4. Other advertisements
Other advertisements which might be deemed controversial, such as issues advertisements, will be discussed and approved by the Editorial Board before they are run.
