Golf prepares for GLVC Championships

Posted on 04.20.2013

The University of Indianapolis women’s golf team placed second out of 16 at the Dolores Black Invitational in Bowling Green, Ohio, April 13-14.

The team carded a second-round score of 310, with sophomores Chanice Young and Jaclyn Schindler finishing in the top five, 79-75 and 82-74, respectively. Junior Amy Thompson tied for 13th place, 79-80, while sophomore Regan Pittard tied for 38th, 83-82, and junior Jenny Konop tied for 56th, 88-81.

The next stop for the women’s team is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships, which Konop said many teams would consider a great accomplishment. However, the Greyhounds still feel the best is yet to come.

“We have pretty high expectations of ourselves,” Konop said. “It’s not just about winning tournaments, it’s about improving with every round. It’s about all seven of us playing great every day. We don’t only want to push ourselves in tournaments, we want to push ourselves individually and as a team to break school records.”

The men’s golf team played April 14-15 at the Midwest Regional #4, placing 12th among 31 teams with a 297-300 score, in a tie with the University of Findlay and behind Missouri-St. Louis. Junior Seve Duncan carded a 71 score, which was good enough for a career best and a three-way tie with two other Greyhounds for 56th place at +6.

Senior Tobin Dunigan said he has high expectations for the men’s team headed into the postseason.

“It [the ranking] is okay right now, but obviously we’d like it to be better,” Dunigan said. “The top eight are invited to the Super Regional, so we want to be firmly inside the top three, so we can take off some pressure.”

Head Men’s and Women’s Golf Coach Brent Nicoson shared his expectation for the next step to regionals and said the teams have one goal in mind.

“Every time we go, we compete for a win,” Nicoson said. “We [the men’s team] probably know it [Otter Creek Golf Course] better than anybody, being around Indianapolis. We’re ranked No. 2 in the region, and so we’ll be in the lead groups that are playing.”

The men will compete in the GLVC Championships April 21-23 at the Otter Creek Golf Course in Columbus, Ind. The women will travel to the Annbriar Golf Course in Waterloo, Ill., for the GLVC Championships April 27-28.
