Swimming and diving teams remain undefeated
The University of Indianapolis swimming and diving teams competed against Ashland University in the annual Pink Meet on Nov. 3.
In addition to team victories, sophomore Tyler Offutt and freshman Courtney Wilder both qualified for nationals. Offutt will now be able to compete in the one-meter, and Wilder in the three-meter diving events in the pre-qualifying event the Tuesday before the NCAA Championships.
Sophomore Justin Rossillo was successful on two different relay teams, in addition to taking first in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:55.95. He also placed first in the 100 back, with a time of 51.17. Rossillo teamed up with junior Muzafer Demirtas, and sophomore Aaron Stevenson and sophomore Daniel Chan for the victory in the 200-medley relay. In the 400 relay, Rosillo joined junior Bruno Barbosa, senior Nikolas Aresti and senior Justin Klopp. The men won the meet 158-96.
Senior Maura Donahue led the women with her individual wins in the 200 free and 500 free. Junior Julia Madeira, sophomore Samantha Asencio and sophomore Hayley Good joined Donahue in the 400 free relay, finishing with a time of 3:33.14.
Asencio and Madeira also earned individual victories. Asencio won the 100 fly (59.13), and Madeira added a victory in the 100 free (53.20). In the 1,000 free, senior Shiran Abrahamson added to UIndy’s victories, along with freshman Michelle Mikaelsson’s who won the 200 IM. The women won the meet 161-92.
These victories against Ashland were not, however, the first of the season. The men took second of six during the Indiana Intercollegiates at Purdue University on Oct. 20. Individually dominating the 100 breaststroke was Demirtas in first, Barbosa in second and junior Nir Posner in fourth.
Barbosa placed second in the 100 free, and Chan placed second in the 200 individual medley. Freshman Dawid Rybinski claimed second in the 500 free at 4:39.02, which moved him into fifth in UIndy’s all-time rankings in the event.
Although the women did not win at the Indiana Intercollegiates, they still archived some noteworthy times and placings. Madeira, the Counsilman-Hunsaker National Collegiate Division II Female Swimmer of the Week, earned third, along with Donahue, Good and freshman Katy Sonksen, in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:39.72.
The Greyhounds began their season with a win against Asbury on Oct. 13.
Donahue started her season with a win in the 200 free, and Wilder won both of her diving events.
Chan led the men’s team with three event wins in the 100 fly, 200 IM, and was part of the 200 medley relay team with Rossillo, Aresti and Demirtas.
Both teams continue their season Nov. 16-17 at Wabash College for the Woehnker Invitational.
