Women’s tennis loses to NKU

Posted on 04.11.2011

After entering the conference portion of their 2010-2011 schedule, the University of Indianapolis women’s tennis team (6-4, 0-1 GLVC) lost to Northern Kentucky University, 5-4, on March 26.

UIndy won points from Alena Perez-Majul at no. 1 singles, Meghan Teunis at no. 4 singles, Kim Wasielewski at no. 6 singles and partners Maggie Ashby and Perez-Majul in no. doubles.

“Although we were able to regain the lead, 4-3, with victories at 1, 4 and 6 singles, we did not manage to clinch the extra point for the win,” Perez-Majul said.

The team was able to gain the lead with Perez-Majul defeating NKU’s Marta Romano 6-1, 6-2, Wasielewski beating NKU’s Holly Robinson 6-1, 6-1 and Teunis defeating NKU’s Jenny Hand 6-2, 7-6 (8-6).

According to Perez-Majul, Teunis stayed focused and closed out her no. 4 singles match, even though she was taken to a tiebreak in the second.

The overall score was tied at 4-4 when the last doubles match between UIndy’s Rachel Barger and Kelsey Hartman and NKU’s Holly Robinson and Claire Spradlin was underway. UIndy fell 9-7 in the no. 3 doubles match, losing with an overall score of 5-4.
“Although we lost,” said Perez-Majul, “no one on the team ever gave up or looked like they were not trying.”

Head Coach John Vener said that losing a couple of tie breakers and having close sets made a difference in the match.

“We are playing different people at different positions, learning where we can be most effective in singles and doubles,” Venter said.

One of the positive things that came from the match was the teamwork. Perez-Majul commented that everyone fought to the last point even if the match had already been decided. The team was able to give 100 percent to the match, even though they were defeated.

The match was disappointing to the team. According to Perez-Majul, it was not an on day for some and because of that, they underperformed that day.

“As NKU is a conference opponent, it was a particularly important match for us,” Perez-Majul said.

The Greyhounds face No. 25 Northwood at the UIndy Tennis Center on April 9, followed by GLVC opponents Kentucky Wesleyan University and Bellarmine University on April 16 and 17, respectively, to close out the regular season.
