Review: Sucker Punch
3 stars
Zack Snyder continues to deliver his action-packed, visually stunning fare in “Sucker Punch.” However, like many of his films, the heavy computer generated images and dazzling visuals overpower the weaker plot elements and leave the film disjointed. The film’s heroine, Baby Doll, suffers at the hands of her abusive stepfather and is committed to a mental institution. The plot picks up when preventing Baby Doll’s looming lobotomization becomes a race against time as she escapes into an elaborate fantasy world to escape her fate à la guns, dragons and explosions.
While the film is heavy on female empowerment, self-sacrifice and the power of the mind, Snyder fails to draw a common thread through the film. It struggles to find steady footing and some of the themes fall flat. Although the graphics and action scenes are gorgeous on the big screen, save this one for the dollar theatre.
