Intramural sports kick off fall season
The fall season of intramural sports, which began Sept. 19, ushered in an atmosphere of intense competition. Flag Football, Volleyball, Softball and Ultimate Frisbee will be offered this fall.
According to Student Activities Coordinator Stephanie Barry, flag football appears to be the headliner this year, with 10 teams of over 12 players already accounted for.
The season began on Sunday, Sept. 19, and they have had games every succeeding Sunday. However, students still have time to join.
“If you come looking for a team, we’ll help you find one,” Barry said.
Barry said that she encourages all students to participate. Senior Taylor Owings has participated in intramural sports for the past four years.
“Get a group of friends together, find a team and get plugged in,” he said. “If you see a group of guys throwing the Frisbee on the lawn, go ask if they have a team.”
As for the officiating of the intramural games, Owings said he has been pleased with the students who volunteer to organize and run the them.
“They do a good job of keeping it fair,” he said.
Owings will be playing Frisbee this fall, and he said eight teams have already formed with 12 players on each team. When competing at least three women and three men are out on the field.
“Frisbee is very competitive on this campus,” he said.
Barry also mentioned that practices for individual teams are scheduled by the team captains, and do not usually cross paths with other sports teams currently in season.
“The season ends the week before finals, and that way students won’t have to worry about a competition,”Barry said. “And can concentrate on their studies.”
Students unable to participate in the fall season of intramural sports can look to the spring season when basketball, soccer, baseball, and kickball will be offered.
“Basketball is by far the most popular intramural sport,” Barry said. “It can be very intense.”
Ownings had similar things to say about it.
“Frisbee is competitive, women’s volleyball is competitive, but basketball is probably the most heated. It’s a just a fun way to keep being an athlete. It’s a good way to keep competing.”
