New athletic facility underway
The University of Indianapolis announced Jan. 28 that they plan to move forward with the construction of a new recreation and athletics center. After much planning and fundraising, university president Dr. Beverley Pitts announced in an e-mail that funds are in place to start on this new structure.
Pitts went on to explain that an air-supported dome, used to minimize costs and get the ball rolling on this project, should be erected by the fall of 2010.
“The dome should be up by fall and, when the interior is complete, will contain a six-lane, NCAA-regulation-sized track. The space within the track oval will have a surface that can accommodate many different sport layouts—from basketball to soccer or volleyball—through use of portable equipment and moveable barriers. In addition, the dome will house a golf practice area, weight room and offices,” Pitts said.
According to Pitts this new structure should be done by late October and students could be enjoying this addition to UIndy’s campus by the end of the first semester next year.
