MOVIE • ‘Precious’

Posted on 11.24.2009

You might think that sitting through a film about an obese, HIV-positive Harlem teenager, pregnant for the second time by her father and battling her abusive mother is no way to spend a movie night. It’s your choice and your loss.

Precious

'Precious'

Save for the clumsy subtitle; ‘based on the novel “Push” by Sapphire,’ Lee Daniels’ “Precious” is a movie that knocks you sideways and then lifts you in ways you never see coming. Newcomer Gabourey Sidibe portrays Claireece ‘Precious’ Jones with amazing dignity, grit and grace. She doesn’t miss a beat. Add to that a top-notch supporting cast that includes comedian Mo’nique as the mother from Hell (Mo’nique is a sure thing come Oscar time) and Mariah Carey erasing the stink of “Glitter” as a no-nonsense social worker and you’ve got one of the best movies of the year. Most movies fade from the memory, this one sticks.
