TV • The Middle

ABC’s TV show “The Middle” gives a glimmer of what life is really like in central Indiana. With failing dryers, credit card debt and the fear of losing a job, all you can really say is “hey, it’s 2009!” Patricia Heaton (“Everybody Loves Raymond”) stars as Frankie Heck, a mother of three. She shows what it’s like to be stuck in the middle of the country, living in a middle class society as a middle-aged mother. Frankie and her husband Mike Heck (“Scrubs” janitor Neil Flynn) are the proud parents of Axl (Charlie McDermott), their love struck teenage son who somehow manages to never be wearing anything but boxers, and Sue (Eden Sher), their geeky daughter who fails at everything she tries. Finally, there is their seven-year-old son, Brick, who desires nothing but a book. Although funny, “The Middle” is also slightly embarrassing for those living in Indiana. Its stereotypical jokes makes those living in central Indiana seem impoverished and uneducated.
