As the first wave of intramural sports at the University of  Indianapolis reached its rapid close, students participating in ultimate frisbee, flag football and powder-puff football reflected on another season gone by and geared up for the Oct. 25 tournament games.

The six-week season concluded Sunday with The Distance claiming the title of champions in ultimate Frisbee, and Team 4 and The Red Hots reigning victorious in flag football and powder-puff football, respectively.

One of the most popular intramural sports offered, the ultimate frisbee season progressed with fervor, as ten teams battled it out before entering the tournament. Teams captained by senior Kean Coy and junior Garrison King claimed undefeated standings in the regular season, and they knew who to look out for as they honed their strategies for the tournament.

“We just have that team chemistry,” King said. “The Distance team probably thinks they’re going to win it for the fourth year in a row, but we’ve got that Wolf Pack offense.”

Coy’s team was evidentially sitting comfortably before the big day, even willing to divulge their secret weapon.

“The team MVP is definitely Brittany Wells,” Coy said. “No girl can stay with her, and if [any other team] wants to win, they better put their best male on her, or they don’t stand a chance.”

Graduate student Greg Mallis captained a team consisting of graduate students and praised their improvement over the last three years.  The team’s record stood at 2 and 3 at the close of the season.

“We’re going to focus on short passes in the tournament, and when the opportunity arises, go for the long passes,” Mallis said.

Largely consisting of cross-country runners, The Frisbeasts were 4 and 1 in the regular season and had high hopes for the tournament, remembering their disappointing loss in the championship game last year. Team captain and sophomore Andrew Piropato kept the game in perspective, however.

“We really just go out there to have fun. We love to play frisbee,” Piropato said.

History did not repeat itself this year for the Frisbeasts, as The Distance and The Wolf Pack made it to the final game, with The Distance edging out the competition for a 9 to 5 victory.

Flag football also concluded Sunday, with five teams participating in the tournament. Going into the tournament, freshman Tyler Diener had confidence in his team.

“We’re just going to keep doing what we’re doing,” Diener said. “We’ll make sure everyone shows up and that we all stay healthy so we’re ready to play.”

Senior Andrew Weisner’s team managed to easily take the title, winning the game 58 to 40.

Experiencing team attendance problems throughout the short season, powderpuff football concluded for the 2009 fall season with The Red Hots claiming the top spot.

The next round of intramural games will commence with coed tennis and women’s volleyball on Nov. 1. Spring games will include men’s, women’s and coed basketball, as well as coed indoor soccer. Kickball and wiffle ball tournaments are also in the works, likely in the form of a one-day event. Ultimate frisbee also is expected to be an option for students, although Mallis has some words of advice for the game’s improvement.

“We need more consistent referees,” Mallis said. “Usually students ref the games, and sometimes they’re not paying attention to the game.”
