Tourney Bound

This year’s softball team is wrapping up the end of their season. Only ten games are left in regular play, and their record is currently 23-13. Though the season is winding down, according to head coach Melissa Frost-Fisher, the team is continuing to work very hard towards their goal of winning the Conference Tournament as well as returning to the Regional Tournament.

“I think we are definitely on the upswing of things, at first we weren’t really meshing, but now I am confident that we are where we need to be,” Frost-Fisher said. “We are making great strides towards our goals.”

Recently the team has been on a winning streak, winning the last 14 games.

On April 18, UIndy traveled to Rensselear, Ind. to face the St. Josephy’s College Pumas in a double header. In the first game, the ‘Hounds won 6-0, having made all of its runs in the 13th inning of play. UIndy came back in the second game to tack on another win to their record, defeating the Pumas 10-1.

According the UIndy Athletics Web site (athletics.uindy.edu), with the wins against the Pumas,  Greyhounds clinched an spot in the GLVC Tournament.
The Greyhounds faced Hillsdale College on April 16 and swept the double-header, winning 2-0 in the first game and 10-0 in the fifth inning of the second game.

On April 11 and 12, UIndy won 8-0 and 8-0 against Drury University. In the second day of action the Greyhounds played Rockhurst University and won 8-2 and 2-0 to sweep the weekend.

The ‘Hounds traveled to Quincy, Ill., April 5 to take on Quincy University in conference play. In the first game, UIndy fell to Quincy 1-4, but came back in the second game to defeat Quincy 3-2.

This season the team has broken records and led in many different areas in the conference. Junior Megan Russell broke the single season record for home runs, the team leads the conference in stolen bases, home runs and are second with batting averages.

“This season the pitching has been phenomenal as well as the hitting, it has been a total team effort a lot of people have stepped up and contributed to our success this season,” Fisher said.

The Greyhounds will face off against Findlay University on April 23, Kentucky Wesleyan College on April 25, and the University of Southern Indiana on April 26.
