Top 10 movies to watch this summer
By Dan Dick & Manny Casillas | Distribution Manager & Editorial Assistant
Come May 1st the summer movie season officially kicks off with the hotly anticipated release of “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.” There’s plenty more where that came from, like the latest “Harry Potter” and a new Pixar feature.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine: Hugh Jackman reprises his role as the brooding anti-hero in this prequel to the X-Men trilogy. While many consider a Wolverine movie unnecessary because of the character’s central role in the other X-Men movies, this one might prove satisfying for the action buff. The trailer showed a montage of battle scenes, including Jackman being shot on a Civil War battlefield, storming the beaches of Normandy and sprinting through the jungles of Vietnam. 5/1/09
Star Trek – “Lost” creator J.J. Abrams brings his re-imagined version of the sci-fi classic to the big screen. The film chronicles the early days of Captain Kirk and the Enterprise, with a sleek, 21st century designs. Excitement is boiling over with fans who are wondering if this movie will succeed in attracting new fans to their ranks. God willing, it shall! 5/8/09
Terminator: Salvation – The fourth movie in the epic sci-fi series, Terminator: Salvation is the first to take place in the dark, post-apocalyptic future where machines rule the world. Christian Bale stars as humanity’s savior, John Connor. Its eye-popping action and special effects guarantee this movie will be one of summer’s biggest blockbusters. 5/21/09
Up – What’s a summer movie season without a Pixar feature? The latest from the animation studio stars Ed Asner (Ed Asner!) as a miserly old man who fulfills his dream of seeing South America by tying thousands of balloons to his home. 5/29/09
Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen – Michael Bay returns at the helm of this sequel to the 2007 smash hit. Decepticons (that’s the bad robots) have come back to Earth to capture Sam Witwicky (Shia LeBeouf) and battle the Autobots (that’s the good robots) for the fate of our world. 6/24/09
Public Enemies – This is latest from director Michael Mann. It’s the story of real life, Indiana-born gangster John Dillinger. It stars Johnny Depp as said gangster (Depp did some shooting in Crown Point last Spring), and co-stars Christian Bale as the FBI agent on his tail. ‘Nuff said. 7/01/09
Bruno – Sacha Baron Cohen returns with his third character, Bruno, a flamboyant, gay Austrian fashionista. Judging from reports of a near-riot in a Kansas town, look for the same fireworks we saw in “Borat.” 7/10/09
Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince – The sixth entry in the Harry Potter franchise was to have been released last November, so it’s probably the most anticipated summer movie of 2009. The usual cast returns, and the story promises to get a lot darker. 7/15/09
Funny People – Judd Apatow’s third feature welcomes Adam Sandler to the troupe as a comedian who believes he is dying. As he takes an up-and-coming comedy writer under his wing (Seth Rogen), he attempts to win back the love of his life. Sounds schmaltzy, but if you know Apatow, the laughs will be there. 7/31/09
Inglourious Basterds – Quentin Tarantino gives new life to an obscure B movie. A mustachioed Brad Pitt leads a group known as The Basterds, in WWII occupied France, whose mission is to kill and scalp any Nazi they come across. We are so there. 8/21/09
