State of Play

State of Play

By Manny Casillas | Editorial Assistant

Ever since 1976’s “All The President’s Men”, journalists in movies have been thorns in the side of anyone who crosses their paths. This is no different. Director Kevin MacDonald has sliced and diced a six-hour 2003 British mini-series of the same name, gutted some characters and completely changed their gender in some cases. Russell Crowe is Cal McCaffrey, reporter for The Washington Globe. When an employee for his longtime friend, Congressman Stephen Collins (Ben Affleck) is murdered, then more bodies start turning up, and Cal and a rookie reporter (Rachel McAdams) start digging. The supporting cast, particularly Helen Mirren, in fine form as Cal’s editor works wonders. “State of Play” can get a little messy in areas, but otherwise, Hollywood has finally given us a no-bull thriller that keeps the twists coming.
