The University of Indianapolis men’s golf team defended its crown in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships April 9-10 at the Otter Creek Golf Club in Columbus, Ind. The victory set a new GLVC record with 14 team titles.
“It [winning the conference tournament] was a great accomplishment, and it shows that we are a force to be reckoned with. It is always special to win the conference tournament,” said senior Justin Hueber.
In addition to the team title, Hueber made history. The All-American, ranked No. 1 in Division II, set a GLVC record posting the highest margin of victory, winning by seven strokes over the rest of the field.
“It was a nice feeling ,walking up to the last hole, knowing that I pretty much had it wrapped up,” Hueber said. “The margin and the record are nice, but I just wanted to win and didn’t care by how many.”
The 2009 Greyhounds posted the GLVC’s lowest 54-hole team score. UIndy saw three of its golfers finish in the top five.
“We are going to super regionals in a few weeks and have some high expectations,” Hueber said. “We are looking forward to playing well and hopefully making it to a national championship.”
According to head coach Brent Nicoson, the team wants to play a good solid Midwest Regional tournament.
“[We want to] be as prepared as possible and qualify for the national championships and make a run at a national title,” Nicoson said.
The men competed in the Midwest Regional No. 3 April 19 and 20, but results were not available as of The Reflector press time.
The women’s team competed in the Saint Francis Invitational April 18-19. Results for the match were not available as of The Reflector press time.
The women competed in the 36-hole, one-day Midwest Shootout April 11 at Purdue University, finishing fifth. The team defeated six Division I programs inthe tournament, including Butler University, IUPUI and Western Michigan University. UIndy was the only Division II program that competed in the tournament.
“That [result] gave them a lot of confidence that we’re right where we should be,” said senior Kristi Piepenbrink.
The women’s team competes in the GLVC Championships on April 25-26.
“Anything but a win there would be very disappointing,” coach Piepenbrink said. “Our girls have worked really hard. We should have won it last year [but we] didn’t play our best. We are by far the best team at this tournament. If we don’t win easily, we did something wrong.”
