The men’s and women’s track and field teams sent five athletes to the 2009 NCAA Division II Indoor Sports Festival in Houston, Texas, March 11-14, resulting in two All-American finishers.

Senior thrower Amy Schmitz earned her first All-American recognition by placing fifth in the weight throw with a toss of 17.51 meters. Schmitz was joined by her teammate, senior thrower Andrea Horban, who also took All-American honors in the shot put. Horban’s throw of 13.92 meters earned her an eighth place finish. Horban was the 2007 NCAA Indoor National champion.

Senior jumper Emily Schaf finished 11th in the high jump with a leap of 1.68 meters, narrowly missing All-American status.

“Amy did an excellent job,” said head coach Scott Fangman. “Both Andrea and Emily are better than what they got, but it was a great learning experience.”

On the men’s side, senior throwers Sam Elmore and Willie Little both competed in the weight throw. The duo placed 11th and 12th, with throws of 18.24 meters and 18.21 meters, respectively.

“It [NCAA Division II Indoor Sports Festival] was disappointing,” Fangman said. “Willie and Sam threw close to their best marks. In past years they would have placed in the top four.”
The NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships will be held May 21-23 at Angelo State University in St. Angelo, Texas.
