Circle K Date Auction raises funds for Riley

The University of Indianapolis chapter of Circle K auctioned six volunteers for a one-night date with the highest bidder as part of the second annual Date Auction to support Riley Children’s Hospital.
“It was a little nerve-wracking,” said junior Mackenzie Pearson. “You’re standing up there hoping someone will up the bid on you.”
The date auction is one of a series of fundraisers that led up to the Riley Dance Marathon on Saturday, March 28.
“Nearly half the money we raised last year came from events leading up to the marathon,” said Shelby Beeler, Circle K member. “We have focused on having fundraisers leading up to the marathon and hope to top last year’s total of $2,700.”
The auction is only a small part of the total earnings for Riley Children’s Hospital, but it serves as a way for Circle K members to get the word out to the public and allow students to interact in a unique way.
“It’s a fun thing that helps a good cause, and it’s good to know you’re really helping people,” said senior Daniel Holmes.
The money raised by events like the date auction will go to benefit families who are in need of care from Riley Children’s Hospital but unable to pay for the treatments.
“We are hoping to bring awareness to the campus about Riley Hospital and all the unbelievable good they are doing,” said senior and Circle K member Rachel Powlen.
The Date Auction lasted only a few minutes but raised nearly $100 for Riley. Participants were treated to food and drinks while discussing their feelings about being auctioned.
“No matter how embarrassing it gets, you know that it’s for a good cause,” Pearson said.
