The University of Indianapolis softball team kicked off its season at the Alabama-Huntsville Charger Chillout in Decatur, Ala., with a 4-2 record after being ranked second in the preseason polls.
The Greyhounds traveled to Alabama to take on the University of Alabama-Hunstville Feb. 28 to March. 1. Due to weather conditions, all games were cancelled.
“We enjoy the polls and seeing what others think of this team, but hard work and dedication are what matters,” said head coach Melissa Frost-Fisher.
The weekend series began on Feb. 20 when the ‘Hounds played both Delta State University and Wayne State University.
In the first game against Delta State, the Greyhounds were down 0-4 going into the fifth inning but came back in the seventh to jump ahead by two runs.
UIndy kept Delta State from scoring the rest of the game and won 6-4. The ‘Hounds improved their record to 2-0, defeating Wayne State University 8-1 in the second game of the Charger Chillout on Feb. 20.
On the second day of the Charger Chillout, UIndy split by winning 5-2 against Truman State University but lost 2-1 to Columbus State University in the eighth inning on Feb. 21.
The Greyhounds ended the weekend tourney with another split. They won 9-6 over Georgia College and suffered a 5-9 loss to University of West Florida on Feb. 22.
“It was a great start to our season [and] made a huge statement for the rest of our season,” said sophomore Cat Sampson. “Other teams saw that we came out and beat a good team, a team that had already played a few games before we did. It shows that we are a solid team and coming out with a winning weekend means we know what we are capable of.”
Practice this year, as in past years, was primarily indoors due to the winter weather.
“I am looking forward to this season and watching the goals that we have set being fulfilled,” Frost-Fischer said. “We are playing on a new field this year, [and] we are playing at Indiana Central Little League just off of Keystone. We have never played there before, but the bases are still 60 feet and the mound is still 43. You just have to adjust to surroundings.”
