Due to injury, the head coach of the track and field team, Scott Fangman, has temporarily left his position to recover. Assistant coaches Kathy Casey, Giles Davis and former University of Indianapolis  athlete Danny Asher have been taking on Fangman’s responsibilities  as head coach and as hurdle and jumper coach.

According to senior thrower Amy Schmitz, Fangman broke his pelvis in three places and some of his ribs on Feb. 1 and had to leave the team for two to three weeks.
Schmitz said that Fangman will probably be in a wheel chair for a while when he comes back to coach.

“It was very unfortunate what happened, but we know he is getting better and will come back as soon as he can,” Schmitz said. “I talked to him on the phone after his injury, and it seems like he is in good spirits. He just wants to come back to be with us.”

Schmitz also mentioned that the assistant coaches have been helping the team to make progress during Fangman’s leave.

“It’s hard without Fangman because he is our leader,” Schmitz said. “But we have other great assistant coaches who are able to distribute his duties.”
Casey said that Fangman is the heart of the team and they want him to get better.

Even with Fangman gone, the Greyhounds broke a UIndy school record at the  Indiana University Hoosier Hills meet on Feb. 13. The men’s distance medley relay team placed third overall with a 10:25.08 time to break the school’s record of 10:29.09. The men’s distance medley relay team consists of sophomores Josh Gornall and Ben Bertoli, junior Cody Parks and senior Mike Landy.

At 2009 Tiger Indoor Invitational host by Depauw University on Feb. 6,  the  women’s track and field team placed second, and the men’s took fourth overall.
For the women’s team, Schmitz won  first place and  senior thrower Andrea Horban took the fourth place, both in the weight throw.

Horban also took  first place in the shot-put. Fifth year senior high jumper Emily Schaf won the high jump and was second in the triple jump.

For the men’s team, junior sprinter Freddie Helms won the top honor in the 55-meter dash. Senior thrower Willie Little took second place, and  senior thrower Sam Elmore was fifth in the weight throw.

“We are doing really well right now,” Schmitz said. “We are right on track, and we are hoping to bring home the GLVC title.”
