The University of Indianapolis men’s basketball program came back from winter break with a new man to their roster, Paul Corsaro. Corsaro is a transfer from Youngstown State University, who also signed to play for the Greyhound football team next season.

Corsaro came in mid-season to UIndy athletics and at the start of the second semester academically.

According to head football coach Joe Polizzi, Corsaro  played quarterback at Youngstown State and will make the competition for starter even tougher on a crowded depth chart this upcoming season.

Corsaro said he has been playing organized basketball since he can remember.

He also started playing football in second grade as a running back before switching to quarterback in seventh grade.
According to scout.com, Corsaro was “one of the top quarterbacks in Indiana in 2006”, coming out of Roncalli High School, and he was recruited heavily by most NCAA Division I colleges.

Polizzi has known Corsaro for many years. He scouted him in high school and also saw Corsaro play alongside his own son, Ben Polizzi, at Roncalli.
“I’ve been familiar with Paul for a long time,” Polizzi said. “I also watched a lot of his games at Roncalli.”

When Corsaro was a junior at Roncalli, he played in 15 games for the football team. Corsaro threw for 1,572 yards and 18 touchdowns. As a shooting guard for Roncalli basketball in the same year, he averaged 18 points per game. He currently holds the Roncalli Rebel program scoring title for basketball.

“UIndy was in my top 10 schools I considered going to, [after graduating from] Roncalli,” Corsaro said.

But upon graduating from high school, Corsaro chose to attend Youngstown State University to play football.

“I left [Youngstown] for numerous reasons,” Corsaro said. “I knew I just didn’t want to go there anymore. I really missed basketball a lot and UIndy presented that opportunity and allowed me to come back home.

Once Corsaro determined he wanted to be a two sport athlete, playing basketball and football,  he contacted head basketball coach Stan Gouard.

“Polizzi gave me the heads up that Paul was on his radar and was thinking of transferring and wanting to play basketball as well,” Gouard said. “Polizzi deserves all the credit for him.”

Gouard said he was looking for something that would help his team, and with Corsaro’s ability on the basketball court, knew he would be an asset.

“Corsaro is a diamond in the rough,” Gouard said. “He could be a major division one player, but he is here.”

Corsaro said he wants to make both the UIndy football and basketball programs better.

“All I want to do is come in and help both teams win,” Corsaro said. “I love to compete and do whatever it takes to win.”
