'Twilight' saga hits the silver screen

'Twilight' saga hits the silver screen

On Nov. 21, the wildly popular novel “Twilight” by Stephanie Meyer busted off the pages and made its debut on the big screen.

The epic love story of Edward Cullen and Bella Swan is told throughout the movie as well as the novel. Edward and Bella are a case of “love at first sight”; from their first meeting right up to the ending credits, their eyes, attention and happiness are consumed by thoughts of each other. There is just one problem with this seemingly perfect match: Edward is a vampire.

‘Twilight’ is the classic love story with a twist. Bella is in a constant battle for her life as we see how her association with vampires, even one who loves her, is the most dangerous thing she’s ever done.

The story line of ‘Twilight’ deals with some pretty dark material. The plot takes viewers on an action-packed race to save Bella before its too late. Fans may find it enjoyable that aside from the adventure and sinister undertones of the movies, there is a refreshing splash of comedic relief throughout the film. Kristen Stewart’s portrayal of the awkward, uncoordinated Bella Swan is a perfect example of the humor incorporated into this ominous plot.

The much talked about portrayal of Edward Cullen by Robert Pattinson was one of the most anticipated aspects of the film. Pattinson proved to live up to fan expectations for the role as he played the impossibly fast, strong and handsome Edward Cullen to a “T.”  The casting of the handsome Dr. Carlisle Cullen will also impress fans. Peter Facinelli captures Dr. Cullen’s character’s smooth temper, vampire –like beauty and personality perfectly.

Fans will find the accuracy of the film as well as the casting of all major roles to be impressive. Viewers will also enjoy the special effects of the film. The dazzling skin of a vampire in the daylight as well as the agility and speed of the entire Cullen family were very well done in the film. However, as with every popular movie based off an already popular novel, is hard to capture personal preferences of each individual viewer.

Due to the huge success of the “Twilight” saga, expectations were high for the film adaptation. The enthusiastic fan base may leave the theatre with mixed emotions regarding the film version of this literary phenomenon. Most fans will agree, however, that the integrity of the film compared to the novel is very accurate. Viewers got a taste of the addicting love story created by author Stephanie Meyer, and despite personal feelings regarding this portion of the saga, dedicated Twilight fans are already thirsting for the next bite.

“Having not read any of the books, I enjoyed this film and the fact that incredibly beautiful people were in it helped.” - Adrian, Managing Editor

“It’s ok if your significant other is really into it and you have to go and watch it. Try and get out of it if you can.” - Courtny, Online Editor

‘Twilight’ the movie was better than I had anticipated. I’m glad they didn’t butcher the love story.” - Staci, Sports Editor
