Takin’ it to the streets

Besides hitting baseballs, the University of Indianapolis men’s baseball team is also hitting the streets, volunteering their time throughout the community to help those who are in need.
The Greyhounds have been cleaning up Southside Park and Village Pantry located on Hanna Ave. by painting, cleaning, pulling up weeds and picking up trash throughout the community
Junior Kyle Anderson said it was nice to be able to take a Saturday off and fix up a sign covered in graffiti in the community park.
“It felt really good to repaint that sign because gangs had damaged it,” Anderson said. “I’m glad I get to do something positive.”
According to Anderson, the team volunteers about once a month, proving they can do more in their spare time besides baseball and schoolwork.
All athletes are required to do some form of community service and according to senior Jason Ornellas, the baseball team decided to do it together.
“We’re having a good time and it’s becoming a bonding experience for the team. We are all giving back to the community by making the surrounding UIndy area look good,” Ornellas said.
Freshman Scott Lawley said with his busy schedule he does not get to volunteer that often, so when he does it makes him feel better about himself.
“It helps me not to take things for granted,” Lawley said. “I realized how good I have it, because it could be worse.”
Lawley advises students to make time to volunteer because there is always a time when students are not busy.
“You always have a time when you’re not doing anything. It’s nice to take that time and help others relax,” Lawley said.
The UIndy baseball team will continue to volunteer throughout the season, hitting a home run every time they sacrifice their time for the benefit of others.
