The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) hosted a kickball tournament on Nov. 9 to raise money for Make-A-Wish Foundation.

“The decision to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation did not just come from our campus,” said SAAC President, Jeannie Hartley. “It was actually a decision from all Division II schools to partner with the Make-A-Wish-Foundation and make that our primary community partner.”

According to Hartley, there are many plans for this year in order to raise money for Make-A-Wish. They collect change at the football and basketball games.

“Upcoming things we are going to be doing, will be selling UIndy Athletic T-shirts at future basketball games and holding a Duckpin Bowling Tournament where all proceeds will go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation,” Hartley said. “We are also teaming with the PRSSA group on campus to hold a 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament at the beginning of next semester.”

Hartley said that since parking has been a big issue, every month SAAC raffles off a parking spot in front of Nicoson Hall.

Other than raising money for Make-A-Wish, Hartley said every year SAAC raises money for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation at volleyball games. For every block that scores a point for the volleyball team, the athletic department donates $3.00. She also said SAAC does canned food drives throughout the school year, usually at the basketball games.

Around Christmas time, the SAAC adopts a family from the United Way, while athletes and athletic families get involved and buy presents.
Two representatives from each team make up the SAAC and promote athletes at UIndy to be involved in campus and community service activities.
According to Hartley, they also require that each athletic team do at least one community service activity throughout the school year.
