The University of Indianapolis announced its plans for a new Student Athletics and Recreation Center on Sept. 20 during the Greyhound’s home football opener.

The campaign calls for the building of a 103,000-square-foot structure. According to the Athletic Department Web site (athletics.uindy.edu), the two-story building would include coaches’ offices, a Hall of Champions, an indoor track, intermural basketball courts, a training room and locker rooms.

The Student Athletics and Recreation Center is likely to be built north of Key Stadium along State Avenue.

According to the Athletics Web site, the overall cost of the project is estimated to be between $7 million and $8 million. Most of the funding will be through bonding and broad-based private support.

The new building will allow more classroom space to be created within Ruth Lilly Fitness Center for programs like kinesiology, sports medicine and athletic training. Also, the center will help eliminate many scheduling problems that occur due to lack of space.

University alumni and trustees Michael Watkins and Thomas Martin are charing the campaign for the center, according the the Athletics Web site.
