The Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center will be showcasing well known artist Katherine Sullivan in a show entitled ‘Body Electric Remix’. Also appearing is University of Indianapolis’ own Steve Guiliani in ‘From Here to There Eventually.’

Sullivan’s most recent series, ‘Bacchant’ is in the Body Electric Remix showcase now at UIndy. ‘Bacchant’ incorporates abstract human figures with textured layers to deliver art that is recognizable, while having an underlying layer.

“My primary concern is that the work garners and holds a viewers attention long enough to become interested in searching for the other, less immediate layers in the work,” said Sullivan.

Sullivan drew inspiration for these pieces from a wide variety of styles from Roman frescoes to Andy Warhol.

“The series in the gallery was largely inspired by the Roman frescoes in the city of Pompeii, particularly the frescoes in the Villa of the Mysteries. It’s also influenced by Andy Warhol and classical sculpture,” Sullivan said.

This combination makes her art appealing to many students. Sullivan said she enjoys UIndy and hopes to return soon.

“I spend a few weeks painting landscapes outside every summer and I’m hoping to include some of those in future group exhibits at UIndy,” Sullivan said.
Guiliani is a 1978 graduate of UIndy’s Department of Art & Design.

His exhibit ‘From Here to There’ eventually is a wide array of figures, composed of dead ponderosa pine from the Colorado Mountains.
Guiliani’s pieces are very distinct using wood tarnished with decay, stains, cracks and beetle holes. This unique talent has been a hit with the university and art enthusiasts.

“We chose to go with Steve’s work not only because he’s a 30 year alum, but because when I saw his work I thought ‘wow, those are interesting images made of wood’,” said Chair of the Art & Design Dee Schaad.

Body Electric & From Here to There Eventually will be open now through Sept. 26 at the CDFAC, Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Also coming up is the UIndy Department of Art & Design Faculty exhibit. The exhibit will showcase the faculty’s artwork in areas like ceramics, graphic arts, painting, drawing, photography and print making.

The showcase will be open Monday through Friday between Oct. 6 and Oct. 31 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

All students and faculty are encouraged to come.
